Office on Drugs and Crime, Afghan poppies — whose sap is the basis for three-fourths of the opium and heroin consumed illegally abroad — are being grown on 197,000 acres across 28 of the country’s 32 provinces. This year the country is expected to produce 3,600 metric tons of opium worth about $2.3 billion, which is equal to half of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product.
